30 Oct PUREing and Adjustable Driver Hosels
On many adjustable drivers, changing the hosel setting rotates the shaft, which moves its PURE plane away from the target. To keep a driver PURE, choose your setting during your fitting, have the shaft PUREd and installed at that setting, and leave it there. If you change settings later, the shaft should be reinstalled.
How adjustable hosels work
Most adjustable drivers use a sleeve, or adapter, glued to the tip of the shaft. The sleeve fits into the head and is held by a screw. To change loft, lie or face angle, you loosen the screw, turn the sleeve to a new position and tighten it again.
On many designs, turning the sleeve turns the shaft with it. That’s fine for a shaft installed by logo. For a PUREd shaft, it matters.
Why it affects PUREing
PUREing finds the shaft’s most stable bending plane and installs the shaft with that plane aligned to the target. If you then rotate the sleeve to a different setting, the shaft rotates too, and its stable plane no longer faces the target. The shaft hasn’t changed; it’s just pointing the wrong way.
Some adjustable systems change settings without rotating the shaft. Ask your fitter which kind your driver has.
How to keep an adjustable driver PURE
- Settle your setting in the fitting. Choose loft, lie and face angle along with the head and shaft.
- PURE and install at that setting. The builder installs the shaft so its PURE plane faces the target with the sleeve in your chosen position.
- Note the setting. Write it down or keep the setting your builder marks, so you can always return to it.
- Leave it there. If you experiment with other settings, return to your PURE setting afterward.
- Changing for good? Reinstall. If you settle on a new setting permanently, have the shaft reinstalled in its sleeve so the PURE plane faces the target again.
What about spare shafts?
If you swap shafts in the same head, each shaft needs to be PUREd and installed in its own sleeve for the setting you’ll play.
Frequently asked questions
Does adjusting my driver undo PUREing?
On many drivers, yes. Turning the sleeve turns the shaft, which moves the PURE plane off target.
Can a PUREd driver still be adjustable?
Yes. You can adjust it, but it’s only PURE at the setting it was installed for. Return to that setting, or reinstall the shaft for a new one.
What should I do if I want a different setting?
Have a club builder reinstall the shaft in its sleeve at the new setting so the PURE plane faces the target.
