SST PURE and Adjustable Drivers: What to Know About Adapter Settings
It depends on the adapter. Some adjustable systems change settings without changing shaft orientation, while others rotate the shaft. If a setting change rotates the shaft, SST PURE recommends having a club builder reset the shaft to the PURE position for your final adapter setting.

Why adapter settings matter
SST PURE finds the orientation where a shaft bends and twists the least off-line, then installs the shaft in the clubhead in that position. On many adjustable drivers, fairway woods and hybrids, the hosel adapter changes loft, lie or face angle by rotating the shaft relative to the head. If your setting rotates the shaft, it may no longer be in its identified PURE orientation.
Independent Testing: Plugged In Golf
In Plugged In Golf’s 2026 driver test, 10 golfers hit two otherwise identical drivers. The PUREd driver averaged +3.72 yards of carry and +6.31 yards of total distance, and 80% of testers correctly identified it by feel. Accuracy results were mixed.
Does changing driver loft affect SST PURE?
It can. On adapters where changing loft rotates the shaft relative to the clubhead, the shaft may no longer be in its identified PURE orientation. The effect depends on the adapter design.
Does changing driver lie affect SST PURE?
It can if the adapter’s lie adjustment rotates the shaft. The important question is whether the shaft orientation changes relative to the clubhead when the setting changes.
What adapter setting should I use when PUREing?
Use the setting you expect to play. When you have a driver, fairway wood or hybrid PUREd, tell your fitter (or SST PURE, if you send clubs in for RetroPURE) which adapter position you will use, so the shaft can be installed in the proper PURE orientation for that final setting.
What if I change my adapter setting later?
If the new setting rotates the shaft, a qualified club builder can reset the shaft so it is again installed in its PURE orientation at the new setting. Some adapters allow changes without rotating the shaft and some don’t, so work with your fitter, or contact SST PURE, before you change settings.
Fairway woods and hybrids
Fairway wood and hybrid shafts can be SST PUREd and installed in their identified PURE orientation. The same rule applies: if the club has an adjustable adapter, choose your final setting before PUREing and have the shaft reset if a later change rotates it.
Moving, regripping and reinstalling PUREd shafts
- Moving a PUREd shaft to a new head: yes, but the shaft must be installed so its PURE orientation is correct in the new head. Adapter design and final settings matter, so have a qualified builder do it.
- Regripping: regripping normally does not rotate the shaft in the clubhead, so it does not change the shaft’s installed PURE orientation.
- Pulling and reinstalling: the shaft’s stable orientation doesn’t disappear when it is removed, but the builder needs the orientation mark or documentation. If that is missing, the shaft may need to be re-analyzed.
Quick checklist for adjustable clubs
- Decide which loft and lie setting you will actually play.
- Tell your SST PURE fitter that setting before the shaft is installed.
- Before changing settings later, check with your fitter whether your adapter rotates the shaft.
- If it does, have the shaft reset to the PURE position for the new setting.
If the shaft rotates, do I need to PURE it again?
No new analysis is needed. The shaft keeps its original analysis and marking, but it may need to be pulled and reset in the club so the identified PURE orientation is restored for your final adapter setting.
