SST PURE Facts: Flex, Torque, Swingweight and Warranty

SST PURE is an analysis and alignment process. It identifies the orientation where a shaft bends and twists the least off-line and builds the club that way. It does not change the shaft’s manufactured flex, torque or weight.

Quick answers

Question Answer
Does PUREing make a shaft stiffer? No. It does not change the shaft’s labeled flex, though some golfers perceive feel differently once the shaft is in its stable orientation.
Does PUREing change shaft flex? No. The manufactured flex designation stays the same.
Does PUREing change torque? No. It does not alter the shaft’s manufactured torque specification.
Does PUREing change swingweight? Not by itself. If an existing club is rebuilt, it should be returned to its intended specs.
Does PUREing add weight? No meaningful weight. Epoxy, ferrules, adapters and grips are normal club-building components, separate from PUREing.
Does PUREing change launch or spin? It does not change loft, shaft model or flex. Orientation can affect how the shaft behaves dynamically, but there is no universal launch or spin change for every shaft.
Does PUREing void a shaft warranty? Warranty terms are set by each shaft manufacturer. Check the policy for your shaft if coverage is a concern.

If PUREing works, why isn’t it done to every shaft at the factory?

Manufacturing a shaft and aligning that individual shaft during final club assembly are different steps. SST PURE is an additional analysis that determines each shaft’s stable orientation relative to the clubhead. Most clubs are assembled in the “Logo Up” position, which is chosen for appearance and is rarely the shaft’s most stable orientation.

Independent Testing: Plugged In Golf

Are modern shafts already good enough? Plugged In Golf randomly selected 36 iron shafts and found steel and graphite almost equally consistent (Load Symmetry Index 95.2 vs. 94.8), yet both still improved when PUREd, by 64.7% for steel and 75.2% for graphite on average.

Does every shaft improve by the same amount?

No. Structural characteristics vary from shaft to shaft, so the amount of rotation and the measured improvement vary too. Your Shaft Analysis Report shows the result for each shaft.

Is the line on a PUREd shaft the PURE plane?

No. The printed line is positioned at 12 o’clock for ease of assembly; the actual SST PURE plane is 90 degrees from that line.
