30 Oct Can I PURE My Existing Clubs?
Yes. Clubs you already own can be PUREd through a process called a retro-PURE. A club builder removes each shaft, PUREs it, and reinstalls it in its most stable orientation. How a retro-PURE works
A retro-PURE is a full disassembly and rebuild of each club. Done properly, it’s a careful process.
- Remove the grip and the tape underneath it.
- Remove the ferrule, the small trim ring where the shaft meets the head.
- Extract the shaft from the head. Graphite shafts are removed with controlled heat so the shaft isn’t damaged.
- Clean out the head, removing the old epoxy from the hosel.
- Clean the shaft tip so it bonds properly again.
- PURE the shaft. The SST PURE machine measures it and marks its most stable plane.
- Reinstall the shaft with that plane aligned to the target, using fresh epoxy and a new ferrule.
- Regrip and check the specs, so length, loft, lie and swing weight match your fitting.
The club comes back with the same head, shaft and specs. The only change is that the shaft now faces its most stable direction.
What it costs
| Price per club | |
|---|---|
| PUREing on a new build | $60 |
| Retro-PURE of an existing club | $140 |
A retro-PURE costs more because of the labor: every club is taken apart and rebuilt. If you’re about to buy new clubs, PUREing them during the build is the better value.
Which clubs to start with
If you’re not retro-PUREing the whole bag, start where it matters most:
- Driver. It has the longest shaft and the fastest swing, so it bends the most.
- Irons. You hit them most, and PUREing the whole set keeps every club consistent.
- Fairway woods and hybrids.
- Wedges and putter, mainly for feel and consistency.
Read why drivers and irons benefit most.
Adjustable drivers
If your driver has an adjustable hosel, choose your setting before the shaft is PUREd. Changing it later can change the shaft’s orientation. Read how adjustable hosels affect PUREing.
