Which Golf Shafts and Clubs Can Be SST PUREd?
Nearly every golf shaft can be SST PUREd: graphite and steel, stock and aftermarket, cut or uncut, in drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, irons and wedges. The main exception is some bent-neck putter shafts.

Shafts
| Shaft type | Can it be PUREd? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Graphite | Yes | Including stock and aftermarket graphite shafts |
| Steel | Yes | Straightness, roundness and the weld seam in steel shafts all affect how they behave |
| Stock | Yes | Limited exceptions such as some bent-neck putter shafts |
| Aftermarket / premium | Yes | Even premium shafts have measurable structural characteristics; SST PURE evaluates each shaft individually |
| Cut or uncut | Yes | Any shaft, cut or uncut, can be PUREd, marked and installed |
| Used or pulled | Yes | If it is suitable for reuse; a qualified builder should inspect it for damage |
| Previously PUREd | Yes, if needed | A PUREd shaft without its alignment line may need to be PUREd again and remarked |
Independent Testing: Plugged In Golf
Plugged In Golf measured 36 randomly selected steel and graphite iron shafts on an SST PURE system. Both materials benefited: off-plane oscillation improved 75.2% on average for graphite and 64.7% for steel, and there was no correlation between flex and the amount of improvement.
Clubs
| Club | Can it be PUREd? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Driver | Yes | Golf Laboratories robot testing covered drivers. See results |
| Fairway woods | Yes | Choose your adjustable adapter setting first |
| Hybrids | Yes | Same adapter rule as woods |
| Irons | Yes | Steel and graphite; robot testing covered 6-irons |
| Wedges | Yes | When the shaft and club use standard shaft installation |
| Putters | Many | Some bent-neck putter shafts are an exception; a licensee can confirm |
Independent Testing: Plugged In Golf
Putters: in Plugged In Golf’s putter test, results were mixed. A few testers improved impact location and consistency, but there was no distance benefit on mishits. Their conclusion: PUREing a putter shaft “definitely won’t hurt your performance, but you may not see any improvements either.” The benefit is clearer in full-swing clubs.
Should I PURE every shaft in my iron set?
PUREing every shaft in a set means each shaft is analyzed and installed in its own measured stable orientation, which is the most complete way to address shaft orientation from club to club. Whether to do the full set is a value decision, but it is the best way to get consistency through the bag.
Can matching shafts need different orientations?
Yes. Two shafts of the same model and flex can need different rotations to reach their stable orientation, because structural characteristics vary from shaft to shaft. That is why SST PURE analyzes each shaft individually instead of assuming one ideal logo position.
Adjustable clubs
If your driver, fairway wood or hybrid has an adjustable hosel, some settings rotate the shaft. Pick the setting you will play before PUREing. Read the adjustable driver guide.
